Die Serie beginnt mit Batman, der eine Reihe von Sabotage-Akten auf Einrichtungen des Deep Space Network untersucht und dabei eine Gruppe von Astronomen bei der Sprengung einer Radioteleskop-Schüssel erwischt. Er versucht dies zu verhindern, was ihm aber trotz der Hilfe Supermans nicht gelingt. Im Laufe seiner weiteren Ermittlungen findet er heraus, dass die Astronomen in Wirklichkeit getarnte Aliens sind, deren Kampfmaschinen wenig später in einem offenbar aus Krieg der Welten entliehenen Szenario wie Meteore auf die Erde regnen und dann beginnen, weltweit große Städte anzugreifen. Wie man später erfährt, war dieselbe Alien-Rasse vor mehr als 500 Jahren für den Untergang der Marsianischen Zivilisation verantwortlich.
Bei den Kämpfen gegen diese Aliens wird Superman von Visionen heimgesucht, die er zunächst nicht einordnen kann. Später stellt sich heraus, dass es telepathische Botschaften von J'onn J'onzz (Martian Manhunter), dem letzten überlebenden Marsianer, sind. Nachdem Superman ihn aus einer von den Aliens kontrollierten US-Militäreinrichtung befreit hat, können sie gemeinsam mit einer Reihe von weiteren Helden, die J'onn ebenfalls telepathisch herbeigerufen hat, die Invasion schließlich stoppen und das Mutterschiff in die Flucht schlagen.
Nachdem die restlichen Invasionsstreitmächte besiegt sind, wird mit Mitteln der Wayne Corp. der Wachturm, eine orbitale Überwachungsstation erbaut. Superman kommt zu der Überzeugung, dass er sich mit den anderen Superhelden (Batman, J'onn J'onzz, Wonder Woman, Flash, Hawkgirl und Green Lantern zusammenschließen muss, um künftigen globalen Bedrohungen besser begegnen zu können: Die „Liga der Gerechten“ war geboren.
Im weitern Verlauf der Serie trifft die Liga auf diverse Erzschurken der einzelnen Mitglieder. Besonders Lex Luthor, Brainiac oder auch das zwielichtige Projekt Cadmus spielen eine wiederkehrende Rolle im Handlungsstrang der Serie. (Quelle: thetvdb.com)
