Animaniacs ist eine Zusammensetzung aus animated und maniac, bedeutet auf Deutsch also animierte Verrückte. In erster Linie geht es um die durchgeknallten „Warner Brothers“ Yakko und Wakko Warner sowie die „Warner Sister“ Dot, die von Zeichnern der Warner Brothers Studios erschaffen wurden. Nach kurzer Zeit wurden sie aber zu aufdringlich und nervig, weshalb sie in den berühmten (real existierenden) Wasserturm der Warner Studios gesperrt wurden, aus dem sie aber in jeder Folge ausbrechen.
Ein zentrales Element der Serie ist die Parodie Hollywoods und des gesamten Filmgeschäfts.
